Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) and Standard Mental Health First Aid (SMHFA) are both designed to provide support and assistance to individuals experiencing mental health challenges. 

Standard Mental Health First Aid (SMHFA) is designed for a wide range of individuals and teaches skills useful in both professional and personal life. It is suitable for anyone who wants to increase their mental health literacy and develop practical skills to identify when someone may need support, and how to provide this support to others. It is designed to be used with other adults, recognising that mental health challenges can affect anyone. SMHFA equips individuals with the knowledge and tools to recognize signs of distress, provide initial support, respond to crisis and guide individuals towards appropriate professional help. SMHFA takes a broader view of the societal and environmental factors that can impact mental health, such as workplace stress, social determinants of health, and access to appropriate resources.

The workplace can play a significant role in employees’ mental well-being. SMHFA is valuable for managers, human resources personnel, and colleagues who want to create a mentally healthy workplace. By participating in SMHFA, workplace professionals gain the knowledge to identify signs of distress, offer support to colleagues, and foster a supportive and inclusive work environment leading to increased staff retention, reduced turnover, and increased psychological safety in the workplace.

YMHFA is for adults who work, live or care for adolescents such as teachers, school support staff, parents, sports coaches, community group leaders and youth workers. Adolescence is a time of important change and development. It is also the time when mental health problems can first emerge, ad YMHFA specifically focuses on addressing mental health challenges in young people, typically between the ages of 12 and 18. It places a greater emphasis on issues that are prevalent among young people, such as anxiety, depression, self-harm, and substance abuse, and also addresses the impact of social media, bullying, peer pressure, and developmental transitions.

YMHFA equips adults with the knowledge and skills to recognize and respond to mental health issues commonly experienced by youth and recognizes the importance of considering the context in which youth mental health challenges occur, such as school environments, family dynamics, and peer relationships. It also provides guidance on how to collaborate with key stakeholders involved in a young person’s life, such as parents, teachers, and school counsellors.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) and Resilience First Aid (RFA) are two distinct approaches that aim to support individuals experiencing mental health challenges, but they differ in their focus and goals.

  1. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an early-intervention program designed to teach people how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. It provides participants with the skills to offer initial help and support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis. The primary focus of MHFA is to increase mental health literacy and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health. It equips individuals with the knowledge to provide initial aid and direct individuals to appropriate professional help.

  2. Resilience First Aid on the other hand, focuses on building and promoting resilience as a means to prevent mental health issues and enhance overall well-being. It aims to equip individuals with skills and strategies to develop resilience, which is the ability to bounce back from adversity, cope with stress, and adapt to challenges. Resilience First Aid training includes teaching various techniques and practices to enhance their mental and emotional resilience, such as stress management, self-care, positive thinking, problem-solving, and social support.

Absolutely, and we encourage it! If someone is trained in both RFA and MHFA, they have knowledge and competencies from the whole spectrum of mental health up until treatment.

Yes, MHFA can be used for Professional Development. A certificate of completion will be provided indicating the training hours earned upon completion upon request. Always ensure you check with your relevant accreditation body for the most up-to-date information.

Yes, you will receive a digital certificate at the completion of the post-course quiz. This can be printed for records (or even framing!). 

If we cancel a course for any reason, a full refund will be provided.

If you are unable to attend a workshop, you will have the option to convert to the next online course or move to a future course for a $50 transfer fee. Notice must be received at least seven business days before the first day of training. There are no refunds available for change of mind circumstances.

You may transfer your course attendance to another participant if you contact us at admin@mindspacetraining.com.au at least seven business days prior to the first workshop date, provided that you have not started with the online training material. You will be required to send back any training materials via registered post at your own expense.
